EUROMECH Colloquium "Cellular Mechanobiology and Morphogenesis", Sirmione, Lake Garda, Italy 21-24 August 2023

What a remarkable event the EUROMECH Colloquium "Cellular Mechanobiology and Morphogenesis", Sirmione, Lake Garda, Italy 21-24 August 2023. The Euromech Colloquium brought together reknown scientists from all over the world, from prestigious Asian and American institutions and winners of European ERC Grants overseas. Illustrating substantially new scientific topics (cellular motility and contractility, single or collective motion during metastasis, the role of the extracellular matrix and the reproduction of cellular dynamics with organs on a chip, super-resolution microscopy) or the most recent results in slightly more consolidated areas (the response of the nucleus and mitochondria to mechanical stress, embryonic morphogenesis and the vascular system) the congress designed new scientific paths and allowed the creation of new collaborations and projects that will have an important role in the medicine of the future. To give some examples, the control of cell motility can be a determining factor in anti-cancer therapies, limiting or delaying the onset of metastatic processes. However, some dynamics associated with the motion of cells, both collective and individual, are not yet entirely clear. In what circumstances and for what reasons does collective motion prevail over individual motion? What signals reach the nucleus during cell motion, and what alterations occur, guided for example by chromatin? What cytoskeletal differences emerge in 3D versus 2D motion, and how is homeostatic tension maintained during the process? What is the role of the extracellular matrix in the interaction between cells and in the regulation of mechanosensing? What biological factors alter its rigidity? What is the energetic cost of motility? Which quantitative indicators describe the mechanobiological processes that govern cell division and its fundamental applications in embryogenesis, angiogenesis, metastasis? Which physico-chemical interactions govern the formation of blood clots, and which cellular remodelings follow the implantation of heart valves, influencing their behavior? New models and new tools (such as: super-resolution microscopy, with the ability to discern at distances lower than 10 nm, therefore at intermolecular distances; organoids and organ on chips; bio-printing; indirect systems for measuring inter-cellular forces and intra-cellular) have been discussed and will be developed to answer these and other questions. A window on the personalized medicine of the future has been opened. Visionary companies (Copan, MDE, BiomimiX, Theras) found fertile ground in the conference and we hope that their participation in the conference can pave the way for new successful business initiatives.

  • The International Summer School "Mechanics for the green economy: Modeling and High Performance Computing in multi-scale and multi-physics processes." was held in Brescia and in Trento, 19-25 July 2017.
Faced as we are with global environmental deterioration, policies to promote cleaner, less polluting technologies must be advocated. This economical-technological-normative framework, named "green economy", poses novel challenges to the scientific community, in industry as well as in academia. This summer school highlighted the important role that the mechanics can have in it. What a success!
